Hell no, charge a premium for ones that have the ability to be rooted with open source software, then let others make that firmware for you for free.

I put DD-WRT on my Linksys router and now it has functionality to support QoS. That's your best route.

The older the better, actually. Once Cisco (Linksys) realized how popular firmware replacement was, they started to limit the onboard memory to make it more difficult, and selling another version with more memory at a higher price. So the older ones usually are the easiest ones to flash the firmware on, as they normally came with 8+MB of flash rather than the current standard of 2MB. What's the model? It's most likely a WRT54G, so look for a version number as well.

And now they'll never include bits of open source code in their routers again...

The router's pretty old, and I can't replace it. I might just get a new router/internet connection for myself and be done with it.

:(

That still leaves a firmware replacement though...

Yes, limit/disable the internet bandwidth. Regarding the programs you mentioned, all the machines on my network are running Mac OS X, so no luck there. And our router doesn't have a QOS setting. :\

Presumably you want to limit the internet bandwidth it uses rather than the LAN bandwidth?

I've never done it but with some quick googling, you could try installing this software on the PC in question: http://www.softperfect.com/products/bandwidth/

Alternatively, you could look at the QoS (Quality of Service) settings in your router.  Or (depending on which model you have?) replace the firmware with something like Tomato: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomato_(firmware)

My home network consists of three computers connected via a Linksys router. Is there any way to limit (or disable) the connection speed to a particular computer? I'd like to be able to selectively limit/disable the connection, without having to remove the ethernet connection on said computer.

Any tips? I can access the router status and enable/disable the connection for the entire network, but I can't seem to selectively limit/disable a particular connection.
